Rebecca Hastings × Annika Romeyn @ Flinders Lane Gallery • Distilling the human experience into artworks, Adelaide-based painter Rebecca Hastings and Canberra-based printmaker and painter Annika Romeyn have wildly different subject matter – yet both leave the maker’s hand imprinted on their work, imbuing it with humanity and scale.

Dredging Up the Past • Taking its name from the title of the Richard Bell exhibition that inaugurated the full year of programming at Gertrude’s current site in 2018, Dredging up the Past documents Gertrude Contemporary’s exhibitions from 2005 to 2025, alongside its studio and exhibiting artists from 1983. The 592-page publication combines indexing with photographs, archival material, critical texts, and Risk Contemporary – a polyphonic account of risk from former directors, curators, artists, and staff. It concludes with a ‘Catalogue of Personnel,’ recognising thousands who have shaped Gertrude’s ecosystem. Rather than presenting a selective history, the book seeks to excavate and record the organisation’s foundations in entirety.
Margaret Preston • Working across painting, printmaking, and decorative arts, Adelaide-born Margaret Preston was one of Australia’s most influential early-twentieth-century artists. Her still lifes – particularly her iconic depictions of Australian native flowers; banksias, gum blossoms, and waratahs – were bold compositions known for their sophisticated use of colour. Shedding new light on the artist, including her artistic networks and complex relationship with First Nations visual culture, the book brings together key works and new scholarship, including contributions from Geoffrey Batchen, Jennifer Higgie, and Lisa Slade. It accompanies the major retrospective at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, on show until 31 January 2027.
