Freddie Spencer – an interview • I’m lucky that my job brings me face to face with great riders from around the world, but sitting down with three-time world champion Freddie Spencer is something else entirely. We grabbed a brilliant chat at the recent Goodwood Festival of Speed, and I also had the chance to ride Honda’s latest CB1000F, Honda’s 2026 homage to Freddie’s early success in AMA Superbike in the early 1980s, as well as a CB750F replica that’s about as close as you can get to what he raced back in the day. What Freddie achieved on the Honda superbike is breathtaking. He was a teenage kid on a muscle bike that basically refused to handle, yet he made it do things that seemed impossible. Those years forged the skills he later took into Grand Prix in both 250 and 500 classes. Beyond the legend and the ability to slide a beast of bike to victory, Freddie, now 64, is simply a genuinely nice guy. It was a privilege to sit down with him at Goodwood, talk through the old days, and appreciate just how extraordinary his journey has been.
