A Few Brief Thoughts on This and That • As always, I feel obliged to warn sensitive readers—although I know this magazine has no such readers, sensitive ones that is, otherwise you would hardly still be here reading this—for the possibility of a certain unhealthy and decidedly politically incorrect romanticism surrounding spirits.

Benromach Organic Single Malt Across Three Vintages: 2013–2015 • Benromach Organic Single Malt. In 1993, the remaining buildings of Benromach Distillery were acquired by independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail, allowing the Urquhart family to fulfil their dream of owning a distillery. When production resumed in 1998, the ambition was to create a single malt whisky with a classic Speyside character: beautifully balanced with a gentle touch of smoke. They succeeded. Benromach also remains one of the few distilleries in Scotland where traditional hands-on production methods are still central to the whisky-making process, largely avoiding automated systems.

Tesseron Cognac – the Cognac equivalent of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti • In the autumn of 2002, Alfred Tesseron had had enough. For decades, the family’s cognac had been sold on to the great and established houses, where the distillates played leading roles in exclusive blends without the Tesseron name ever being mentioned. The quality was unquestionable, yet the recognition and true identity were often lost behind the scenes. Eventually, the realization grew that the time had come to create something of their own. Resting in the family’s cellars was already a treasure trove of aged eaux-de-vie, filled with generations of knowledge and patience.
