about our contributors

Mentors Who Sit Beside You • i recently joined a Facebook group called “Young and Millennial Quilters.” I imagine most of the members are in their 30s. I joined mostly out of curiosity—and perhaps mild anthropological interest. I’m in my mid-50s now, but I still feel young at heart, so I lurk. I’m curious what the next generation is interested in: fabrics, patterns, designers, machines, quilt shows, and community.

Art MEETS Modern • across the works in this gallery, you may notice that clear distinctions between art quilts and modern quilts tend to soften. Rather than fitting neatly into one category or another, they reveal how the two approaches often merge, creating pieces that feel both expressive and minimal: narrative and bold.

Culture of Giving • GENEROSITY IN ACTION ACROSS THE COMMUNITY

Ann Feitelson From Canvas to Quilt • “i am very lucky to have had an excellent arts education. It matters a great deal in persevering through inevitable frustration, analyzing what I see, and forging my own path.

Four Towns, a Thousand Quilts Discovering Carrefour • each September, more than fifteen thousand quilters and textile art enthusiasts gather in Alsace, Eastern France, for Carrefour—The European Quilt Show. Spanning four small towns, the event presents dozens of exhibitions and thousands of quilts across traditional, contemporary, and modern practices.

Kansas AND Korea Shin-hee Chin’s Naturescapes from Two Worlds • when Shin-hee Chin was growing up in South Korea, she woke up every morning to a view that was a perfect picture. Her urban home was nestled among trees and greenery, and in the distance was a sweeping view of the mountains. This epic landscape was a precious gift for a young girl who dreamed of becoming an artist.

shelf life & studio finds • Creative resources to fuel curiosity at the worktable and beyond.

Stitching the Nation Quilting at the Heart of Handwork 2026 • in 2026, as the United States marks its 250th anniversary, Handwork: Celebrating American Craft 2026 (known as Handwork 2026) invites the nation to reflect on the breadth of the handmade over the last 250 years. This yearlong initiative presented by Craft in America brings together more than 250 organizations through exhibitions and events, representing all 50 states and Puerto Rico, culminating in an exhibition in Washington, DC, at the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum in November 2026.

Artists Who Shaped Us

Making My Mark From Print to Stitch • to keep my sanity, I work my thoughts and pain out into my art. I often use flowers and nature as symbols, but sometimes I do have to hit the viewer over the head with my meaning. I consider this my artistic voice.

Floating Finishes for Art Quilts with Raw Edges • art quilting involves as much problem-solving as creativity. How do I stitch together the improv composition on my design wall? How should I quilt the assembled top? And how should I finish the edges?

Pressed in Cloth An Enduring Vision • the day I made my first cyanotype print on fabric, I knew I’d found the medium for my artistic life’s work. In 2003, I had to go to some effort to source pretreated fabric to experiment with, and it was immediately obvious that the endeavor was worthwhile. I turned that first print into my first art quilt, and I...
