From the publishing editor • How good is spring? Even the word just comes forth with energy. Here at FLM we enjoy every season but we have to admit being in a spring mindset through the winter while working on this colourful issue of FLM was a welcome distraction on some of those colder days…

Forever, reimagined • Twenty years is enough time to know whether a house has become a home. For Jon and Sandy, their rural property had long since earned that title.

The Heart of EK Kitchen & Wines • A bumpy grey cloudscape is looming overhead as I make my way to Ekhidna Kitchen & Wines, also known as EK, the promise of a coffee the only warmth around. Sheep on the fence lines fill their bellies with lush grass beside bare, gnarly vines. I catch sight of more than a dozen grey wallabies cowering under those empty vines, seemingly waiting for spring to arrive.

The architecture of exposure • At Waitpinga, the ground is not so much a passive surface but rather a calcareous landscape of windblown cliffs. It’s a coastline still being negotiated by the ocean. Here, the landscape takes command and offers little refuge.

Becoming visible • Margaret Ambridge remembers with total clarity the moment she committed herself to depicting older women’s bodies in her art. She was exhibiting in Melbourne when one of the judges congratulated her before admitting he'd had to look away.
